Rone has gone from spearheading Melbourne’s fledgling street art movement in the early 2000s (as a member of the Everfresh crew) to being a celebrated fixture on the international street art scene.
What would you tell your 18-year-old self?
Compare yourself to the world not to the city you are in. After a lot of travel I found that where you come from does not make you any more gifted. You can be on the world stage from anywhere you happen to be.
What do you do to center yourself and find focus?
Driving with no music.
Does the space you work in have an interesting story?
Quite the opposite. It was so boring that no-one wanted it. It should have been a cafe but in a cafe-saturated environment, we got a great deal. The warehouse I have is a temporary dream space. So much room to do anything we want but with a future demolition hanging over us at any moment.
Do you work and live in the same space, if so how does that affect your work?
Not at all. I am very happy to have them seperate.
What are you most proud of in the space?
Big sliding glass windows that we can open on nice days.
How would you describe your neighborhood?
It is now at the height of gentrification but was once affordable for artists. We are just lucky enough to have been here for so long.
What can you see outside your windows?
A few building sites, a one way street, a pub & a cafe on the corner. What themes do you pursue in your work?
Beauty and decay
What is your dream project?
I have been researching what it might take to build my own town.
Favourite song/band while working?
I work best with a podcast or audio book. But what I listen to a lot is classic rock/folk.
What is your most important artist's tool?
I think it might be the camera. It all starts and finished there for me.
What mindset/mood do you make your best art/work?
Everything needs to be tidy before I start.
When you day dream in your space and just lose yourself in thought, what are you thinking or worrying about?
I have a lot of ideas that never happen, but a lot of time is put into thinking about how to make any idea feasible.
Also, have I forgot to pick up Gus from childcare??
