DAVID NOONAN

David Noonan's eerie images draw on a vast collection of avant-garde theatre and dance photography from  the 1960s and 70s. These photos, gathered from magazines, antique books, archival documents, and also tapestries, silk screens, and fabric collages are a doorway into the past and a jumping-off point for the artist’s aesthetic explorations. David’s dedication to ancient textile-making compresses these many ‘pasts’ into the window-space of his paintings, collages, and sculptures.
At the studio, one has the impression these theatrical, performative worlds bleed out of the canvas to take over the artist’s space, like a memory too big, loud, or haunting to be contained by the past.
