I met MARCO CROCCHIANTI at a gallery opening in the Meatpacking District. It was a chance encounter and we hit it off talking about all the things we love about Italy, which is where he is from.

Sometimes I have an instant feeling that I want to shoot someone’s studio when I meet them, even though I don’t know what to expect. So it was a pleasant surprise to go to Park Slope once afternoon and find myself at one of the gorgeous townhouses opposite the Park. It was a rare treat for me to spend some time in his lovely backyard, where his studio is situated in the garage.

Marco is a talented artist, who has recently changed mediums, creating hyper-real drawing using only a pen to create light and shade. He is currently building his body of work and I can’t wait to go to his first exhibition.

Find him on instagram here.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL WORKSPACE IN THREE WORDS?
Big, tall, bright.

WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT I WOULD BE SURPRISED TO FIND IN YOUR SPACE?
A full set of garden tools (space is at a premium in NYC!)

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR SPACE?
Since my work is focused on my living and working spaces, most of the objects in my space inspire my works, from the mundane, like pens and brushes, or bottles, and old furniture, to the more esoteric like prints and sculpture, books.

WHAT CAN YOU SEE OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOWS?
In NYC, I feel very fortunate to have a view to two beautiful trees and a hidden garden complete with a bamboo fence and lots of shade-loving plants.

WHAT THEMES DO YOU PURSUE IN YOUR WORK?
My work is often self-referencing, for example, because they are representations of my life spaces, they may include a work in progress with a photo from which the work is being executed.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ARTIST’S TOOL?
My most important ‘tool’ is probably the physical capacity for very small repetitive motions with my hand and fingers, which can be continuous for hours at a time.

Where They’ is a visual documentation of the creative environments of artist & people, that meet during my travels, of homes and studios.
