I photographed Robert Doble back in 2019, when he was working out of a studio in country Victoria. It was right at the very beginning of Where They Create, and he was one of the artists who opened their doors to me when this project was still finding its shape.

Robert is a British-born, Melbourne-based painter whose work explores surface, gesture, and the marks that sit between abstraction and emotion. Looking back now, I can see how much that early shoot influenced the way I approached artists’ spaces in the years that followed.

I recently revisited the images and re-edited the series, and I’m happy to share them again.

Robert — thank you for opening up your studio all those years ago.
